Underachieving Perfectionists

Tuesday Jan 17, 2023

Tuesday Jan 17, 2023

When what we’re capable of doesn’t match the results we’ve created, we’re underachieving.

One of the factors impacting underachievement is perfectionism.

Perfectionism is “refusing to accept any standard short of perfection.”

Perfectionism may cause you to “wait to start” or “wait to finish” until you can do so without fault, error, or mistakes.

I invite you to consider these questions:

When might you be willing to be “done rather than perfect”?
When might you be willing to complete B+ work?
When might you be satisfied with “good enough”?
How might it be true that you only need to know the one next “good enough” step?

Why You Underachieve

Monday Jan 16, 2023

Monday Jan 16, 2023

Susan Winebrenner defines “underachievement” as “a discrepancy between capability and achievement.”

Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom by Susan Winebrenner.

Underachievement can be caused or affected by these factors:

perfectionism
work that is too easy or too difficult
lack of opportunity to use one’s learning style or strengths
lack of opportunity to pursue one’s passions
resistance to learning things that are arbitrary or irrelevant to one’s life
fear of being rejected for being different
lack of dreams or goals perceived to be attainable
family interaction patterns that interfere with learning

Here’s my definition of underachievement:

“The gap between a person’s gifts, talents, passions, and strengths and the results they really want to create in their lives.”

I invite you to consider these questions:

Where are you “underachieving” in your life?
Which gifts and talents are you currently not prioritizing?
What passions really light you up?

You Must Have White Space

Sunday Jan 15, 2023

Sunday Jan 15, 2023

In screenwriting, you want to have as much WHITE SPACE as possible on your script page. White space makes it easier to read the script.

I’d argue that you need more WHITE SPACE in your life. WHITE SPACE basically refers to OPEN AREAS of actual physical space, room in your day or calendar, peace in your brain, etc.

I invite you to consider these questions:

Where do you need more WHITE SPACE in your life?
Why do you rush to fill space instead of letting it remain open or empty?
What feels uncomfortable about having WHITE SPACE?

Contain That Sh*t

Saturday Jan 14, 2023

Saturday Jan 14, 2023

In her book Decluttering At the Speed of Life , author Dana K. White teaches to “only keep what you can contain… “ (and I paraphrase).

When we practice “keeping only what we can contain,” we intentionally make decisions to keep only what we have the capacity for NOW - we stop assuming what we’ll want or need in the future.

I invite you to consider these questions:

Which of your CONTAINERS are too full?
What don’t you have room for?
What are your essential few things or commitments you really want to keep or prioritize?
Which areas of your life require CONTAINERS?
If you start letting go of whatever your TOO MUCH might be, what is your brain telling you will happen:
you’ll miss out?
you’ll feel regret?
you’ll be lacking?
you won’t have enough?

Essentialism by Greg McKeown is a terrific read.

You are stuck in COMPARISONITIS when you measure yourself against someone else and feel inferior. When we are in COMPETITION with others, we feel better than them and feel superior.

Whether you’re comparing or competing, you’re stuck in:

unworthiness
insufficiency
inadequacy

I invite you to consider these questions:

Who do you compare yourself to?
Who do you compete with?
If you feel inferior, what are you telling yourself that you’re NOT ENOUGH OF?
If you feel superior, in which ways are you striving to be MORE than someone else?

When You’re Not Willing To

Thursday Jan 12, 2023

Thursday Jan 12, 2023

You must know what you’re willing or not willing to do. If you’re willing to do something, it is likely because you have the sustainable energy and capacity to do so. If you’re not willing to do something, it may be because:

you don’t have the capacity to do it
it’s not aligned with your values
it’s not a priority according to you

I invite you to consider these questions:

When are you reluctant to communicate what you’re not willing to do?
What is the worst thing someone else may think or say about you if you say NO?
How does your body let you know that you aren’t willing to do something?
How willing are you to allow the discomfort that comes from failing to meet the expectations of others?

Decluttering Is Not Organizing

Wednesday Jan 11, 2023

Wednesday Jan 11, 2023

In her book Decluttering at the Speed of Life, author Dana K. White teaches (and I paraphrase): “Decluttering is not the same thing as organizing.”

For me, organizing can tip into perfectionism, whereas decluttering is all about creating space.

I invite you to consider these questions:

What are you thinking or feeling when you declutter?
What are you thinking or feeling when you organize?
How much space do you crave?
How important is being organized to you?

When You Assume Future Needs

Tuesday Jan 10, 2023

Tuesday Jan 10, 2023

In her book Decluttering at the Speed of Life, author Dana K. White talked about making assumptions regarding what we may want or need in the future.

I invite you to consider these questions:

What are you assuming that you’ll need in the future even though it no longer serves you?
When do you notice feeling FOMO now when you consider letting something go?

Uncontrollable Clutter

Monday Jan 09, 2023

Monday Jan 09, 2023

In her book Decluttering at the Speed of Life, author Dana K. White comments (and I paraphrase):

“Clutter is anything that is uncontrollable.”

We may encounter clutter in our:
physical environments
bodies
brains
schedules
relationships

I invite you to consider these questions:

What part of your home is uncontrollable?
Which habits have become uncontrollable?
Which foods and beverages feel uncontrollable?
Which relationships feel uncontrollable?
When does your brain and limiting thoughts become uncontrollable?
When does your schedule or calendar become uncontrollable?
How willing are you to get rid of anything that is uncontrollably cluttered?

Overwhelm Guilt

Sunday Jan 08, 2023

Sunday Jan 08, 2023

Once your body and brain hits “overwhelm”, the only way “out” is by doing nothing. At this point, we must create the space for stillness, solitude, and silence.

When we feel guilt, it means that according to us, we have behaved in a manner that we’re not proud of.

Overwhelm guilt occurs when we feel as if we’re doing something wrong when we prioritize rest.

I invite you to consider these questions:

What is your brain telling you that you’re guilty for?
When do you push yourself past capacity in order to keep taking care of others?
What is the worst thing someone else might think or say about you if you take a break to rest?
When do you notice arguing with your body’s needs?
