There’s a difference between being introverted and being socially anxious.
Introverted people tend to:
recharge from within
enjoy solitary pursuits
relax and unwind alone
A person who struggles with social anxiety may experience:
worry about doing something embarrassing in public
avoid interacting with people
get fixated on potential “screw-ups” in social settings
feel frustrated and lonely because they struggle to connect with others
(Based on the Healthline article: “Yes, Introversion and Social Anxiety Are Two Different Things” by Crystal Raypole.)
Social Anxiety Vs. Introversion
I invite you to consider these questions:
Do you notice an “alarm” going off in your body when you’re in social settings?
What types of social situations are most triggering?
What do you tend to be thinking in triggering social situations about you or about others?
When do you resist your need to recharge as an introvert?
As an introvert, what types of social engagements do you prioritize?

Because we’re human beings with human brains and bodies, we are going to get triggered at times when we’re in a social setting or scrolling on social media.
We tend to get triggered when we compare ourselves to others in regard to:
appearance/attractiveness/clothing
wealth/income
education/intelligence
gifts/talents/strengths
social status/relationship status
success/achievements
career/job
children’s accomplishments
your zip code
I invite you to consider these questions:
When have you noticed feeling inferior in regard to your:appearance?
income or financial status?
level of education or type of intelligence?
your children or lack thereof?
residence or neighborhood?

The Most Difficult First

Tuesday Feb 14, 2023

Tuesday Feb 14, 2023

As a classroom teacher, I’d have my math students complete the “three most difficult problems” first. My reasoning was this - if they could successfully solve the most difficult problems, there was zero need for them to do any of the other problems.
In your professional or personal life, what tasks are your most difficult? Get in the habit of doing these tasks first in order to “buy back” time or energy to tackle other things.

I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice being forced to do more than you’re willing to do in order to demonstrate your competency or mastery?
What are the most difficult truths you have been avoiding telling yourself?
How willing or ready are you to address these truths?
What might allow you to speak to these truths in your life?

When we don’t get “equal air time” or feel seen or heard, we may feel excluded, rejected, or left out.
I invite you to consider these questions:
When someone else gets “more time” than you do, how do you tend to respond? Do you tend to:fight for equal air time?
run away from the situation because it feels too stressful?
shut down and feel incapable of speaking up?
tip into people-pleasing in an attempt to “earn” your right to be seen or heard?
When someone else gets more attention or more time than you do, what you make it mean about you?
What do you make it mean about them?

We can “have our own backs” before, during, and after triggering or stressful situations.
Before you enter the stressful/triggering situation/environment, try this:
tell yourself the truth: “I don’t want to go.”
take control of the decision to go: “I’m deciding to go.”
decide the minimum amount of time you’re willing to be there: “I’m willing to be there for 20 minutes or until I… “
While you’re there, try this if you get triggered:
excuse yourself to a quiet place or to the restroom
take two rapid breaths through your nose
acknowledge the trigger: “I’m triggered right now.”
describe the physical sensations of stress in your body: “My chest is tight and my back’s sore.”
tell yourself: “Once I’m alone again, I’ll take care of myself.”
buy yourself time to process before you react/respond to what someone says/does: “I’m going to process everything and I’ll circle back when I’m ready.”
After you leave the triggering situation/environment, try this:
ask your body: “What do you need?”water?
exercise?
journaling
hug/affection
more breathing?
talk to someone?
rest?
do something creative?
after you’ve calmed your body, get curious about what triggered you - “Oh, there’s the story I’ve had about needing her approval to feel worthy.”

Your Learning Contracts

Saturday Feb 11, 2023

Saturday Feb 11, 2023

In education, a LEARNING CONTRACT is an agreement between a student and a teacher regarding what the student is responsible for learning and completing.
We, too, have “learning contracts” in our relationships. When you feel an energetic charge (positive or negative) with another person, you share a “learning contract”.
I invite you to consider these questions:
With whom do you share a learning contract?
Which of your contracts feel deeply satisfying?
Which of your contracts feel deeply frustrating?
Who triggers you? What can you learn from this relationship?
Who inspires you? What can you learn from this relationship?
Which skills are you meant to learn in your relationships?

What You Keep and Store

Friday Feb 10, 2023

Friday Feb 10, 2023

When we keep things that we don’t love or use, we are sacrificing valuable space to store these items.
We unconsciously keep and store more than possessions. We also receive:
opinions
advice
comments
compliments
criticisms
obligations
expectations
“shoulds”
I invite you to consider these questions:
Which possessions are you tired of keeping or storing?
Which opinions, advice, comments, compliments and criticisms from others are you still “keeping” or “storing”?
Which obligations, expectations and shoulds are you still “keeping” or “storing”?
What prevents you from getting rid of anything that no longer serves you?
What might it take to finally let it go?

Here’s my working definition of “bright lines”:
“Anything that is clear and - not murky or questionable.”
In her books Bright Line Eating and Rezoom, author Susan Pierce Thompson teaches a “bright line” approach to ending food addiction:
no sugar
no flour
measure the quantity of food you eat
establish consistent meal times
“Bright lines are boundaries that you just don’t cross, no matter what. And when you stick to them, you get consistent and predictable results.”
Susan Pierce Thompson Ph.D.
We, too, can benefit from “bright lines” in every area of our lives.
I invite you to consider these questions:
How are you willing to tolerate and not willing to tolerate?
What’s OK and what’s NOT OK?
What are you willing to do and not willing to do?
Where do you have rigid restrictions disguised as bright lines?

Every Monday, I tackle any “unfinished business”. Here’s my working definition of “unfinished business”:
“Any task, project, or commitment that’s been considered or started yet not finished, completed, or closed.”
I invite you to consider these questions:
What have you started yet not finished or completed?
Do you still want to complete it?
Do you have the same sustainable energy to complete it?
What have you resisted beginning because it feels too complicated or overwhelming?
What is the one, small, actionable step you can take in order to make continuous progress?

When Labels Suck

Tuesday Feb 07, 2023

Tuesday Feb 07, 2023

Labels can be critical or empowering. When labels instigate “black and white thinking”, they don’t serve us or others.
Invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice labeling others?
When do you label yourself?
Are your self-labels empowering or critical?
When someone labels you, what do you make that mean about you or them?
What’s your intention for labeling others?
When do you notice feeling inferior when others label you?
What do you notice feeling superior to others when you label them?
Which labels can you connect to empowering identities?
