How Busy Work Dilutes Joy

Sunday Jul 16, 2023

Sunday Jul 16, 2023

These are the 6 habits that will dilute your joy:
“busy” work
obligations
shoulds
seeking more
balancing your time and energy
a one-size-fits-all approach
“Busy” work dilutes your joy by:
wasting your time and energy with unimportant tasks and activities
failing to challenge you
not requiring you to use your gifts and talents
cluttering up your schedule
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice doing “busy” work?
What prevents you from saying NO to “busy” work?
What keeps you from delegating or eliminating “busy” work?

There’s a huge difference between “feeling” happy and “being” joyful. Happiness is an inconsistent feeling which is temporarily created by the meanings you create about your circumstances. Joy is a consistent mindset which is independent of your circumstances.
Both joy and happiness matter deeply.
I invite you to consider these questions:
What is deeply joyful in your life?
When do you notice feeling happy?
What role will joy play in your life?
What role will happiness play in your life?

If you’re hustling to “feel” happy, it’s much like:
a filmmaker over-relying on special effects at the expense of a solid story and wonderful characters
buying something new and getting giddy because of the novelty of the purchase
a chef adding too much salt, sugar, and oils to food to mask the lack of quality of ingredients
If you’re experiencing joy, it’s much like:
a filmmaker prioritizing an excellent scrip, plot and character development first
being satisfied with how you’re consistently using your purchase
great quality ingredients being the basis of a culinary masterpiece
I invite you to consider these questions:
What analogy do you have for happiness?
What analogy do you have for joy?

If you’re hustling to “feel” happy, you’re likely cluttering your life, schedule, body, and mind.
When you’re experiencing joy, you’re likely to create priorities, whole-hearted commitments, and grounding habits, rituals, or routines.
I invite you to consider these questions:
What do you notice creating when you’re striving or hustling for happiness?
What do you notice creating when you’re committed to experiencing joy?

If you’re hustling to “feel” happy, you’re likely:
stuck in comparison-itis to other or competition with others
hustling for more
seeking “easy” and immediate pleasure
desperate to avoid the pain of uncomfortable emotions
tipping into “over-ing” habits like:overeating
overdrinking
overspending
over-scheduling
over-committing
over-fixated on the future
seek extreme dopamine hits
cling to immediate yet temporary habits
When you’re creating a habit of joy, you’re likely to:
be grounded in empowering habits, rituals, and routines
focus on who you are
committed to creating different
feel the discomfort of difficult emotions
feeling content in the present moment
notice what gives your sustainable energy
commit to habits that benefit you long-term
I invite you to consider these questions:
What do you notice feeling when you’re striving or hustling for happiness?

If you’re striving to “feel” happy, you are likely doing so from a place of:
insufficiency
inadequacy
restlessness
perfectionism
guilt
When we are creating a habit of joy, we tend to do so from a place of:
sufficiency
adequacy
fulfillment
purpose
contentment
peace
satisfaction
I invite you to consider these questions:
What do you notice feeling when you’re striving or hustling for happiness?
What do you notice feeling when you’re committed to creating a habit of joy?

How To Want What You Have

Sunday Jul 09, 2023

Sunday Jul 09, 2023

There’s a huge difference between “feeling” happy and “being” joyful. Happiness is an inconsistent feeling which is temporarily created by the meanings you create about your circumstances. Joy is a consistent mindset which is independent of your circumstances.
What we think or believe will influence whether or not to strive to feel happy or are adopting a joyful mindset.
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice tipping into a “fear of missing out” belief?
When do you notice “having to get what you want” or “having to get what they have”?
When do you notice “wanting what you have”?

There’s a huge difference between “feeling” happy and “being” joyful. Happiness is an inconsistent feeling which is dependent on your circumstances.
Joy, on the other hand, is a consistent mindset that you intentionally choose to practice. Joy is independent OF your circumstances.
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice feeling happy? When don’t you?
When do you notice being joyful? When don’t you?

When we love the process of doing something, we are satisfied AS we create a result. When we only love the result of “having done” something, we are trying to live vicariously through the results of our actions.
For something to be sustainable, we must love the process AND the result.
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice love the results but not the process?
When do you notice loving the results AND the process?
When you notice loving the process, what makes it enjoyable and sustainable?
What brings you genuine joy to do and be?
