There is a difference between collecting information and applying it. We can know and understand, but if we don’t use the information and understanding in our daily lives, we aren’t really growing or expanding.
I don’t believe that we need more information in order to make sustainable change. We might need a small amount of different information AND a simple and sustainable system for applying the information.
If you’re stuck, you might need:
different information
a sustainable, simple system for applying the information
a habit for managing uncomfortable emotions so that you can follow through with your system
I invite you to consider these questions:
How might it feel to practice thinking: “I know enough”?
What benefit do you get from collecting more information than you really need to change?
How willing are you to create a simple, sustainable system for making the changes that really matter to you?

We can be sensitive to the needs of others without sacrificing our own health, well-being, and relationships.
“... being sensitive to the emotional needs of others is actually about understanding other people’s emotional needs but not necessarily doing something about them. It can hold space without taking it on as something to fix.  And, when we are really honest with ourselves about what belongs to us and what doesn’t, our capacity, our boundaries, and our values, it is easy to know when to hold space and when to try to meet their needs.”
Christie Inge
The Sensitive Soul
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice setting yourself on fire in order to keep others warm?
When do you notice assuming that it is your responsibility to “fix” someone else’s emotions?
How willing are you to give yourself the permission to be sensitive to the emotional needs of others without having to do anything about them?

How To Boost Dopamine With A Menu

Wednesday Nov 06, 2024

Wednesday Nov 06, 2024

“Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in the function of many areas of the body, such as digestion, sleep, learning and emotional health, including how one feels pleasure and reward… while other neurotransmitters, such as serotonin, also boost your mood, dopamine is a bit different because it's linked to reward and motivation. Essentially, you feel its release as you mark something off your list—big (a marathon) or small (finishing up meal prep for the week)... a dopamine menu is filled with activities and tasks that leave you with a sense of reward once they’re done. When you need a feel-good hit, you can choose something on your menu to improve your mood.”
“How To Make Your Own Dopamine Menu And Why It May Help Increase Happiness” by Elizabeth Shaw, M.S., RDN, CPT
Here’s an article for your consideration:
Dopamine Menu
Here’s a quick video:
Dopamine Menu Video
I invite you to consider these questions:
What are your dopamine entrees? How often do you get to indulge in these rewarding activities or experiences?
What are your dopamine appetizers? Can you enjoy them in less than 10 minutes?
What are your dopamine sides? Which boring, mundane tasks can you pair them with?
What are your dopamine desserts? What amount of time boosts dopamine without sending you into hyper-focus?

How do you really know if you’re a “good” person? First and foremost, please intentionally decide what your definition of “good” actually is. And, decide if you want to use the word.
I invite you to consider these questions:
In order for other people to think that you’re a “good” person, what do you need to keep, start, or stop doing?
In order for you to think that you’re a “good” person, what do you need to keep, start, or stop doing?
When does it serve you to use the word “good”? When doesn’t it?
How might it feel to decide that you want to be someone who is IN integrity?

“Other awareness” is one of the four pillars of emotional intelligence. When we are self-aware and know/understand why we do what we do, we naturally become more other-aware and cognizant of the people we encounter or are in relationship with in our lives.
If we lack other-awareness, we may unintentionally exclude others.
Often, we unintentionally exclude because we ourselves have been excluded and/or are fearful of being rejected.
I invite you to consider these questions:
When I feel excluded, how do I have my own back?
What prevents me from being aware of myself when I’m feeling excluded?
What prevents me from being aware of others?
When do I notice “groveling” to be included even when I’m sacrificing who I really am in order to avoid rejection?
When do you notice trying to be something or someone you’re not?
What prevents you from telling the truth about who you really are?
What prevents you from “putting yourself in rooms” with other like-minded people?

We all fall into the habit of checking boxes in our professional and personal lives. “Boxes” are anything we feel obligated to do or be because we were conditioned to believe that by doing so, we would be right, successful, or happy.
In order to stop checking obligatory, arbitrary boxes in order to buy back time to intentionally create whole-hearted commitments, we must be willing to revisit every YES and intentionally decide if we want to continue to prioritize the investment of our valuable yet limited time and energy. In other words, we must be willing to re-commit to anything taking up space in our lives.
I invite you to do this:
On a piece of paper, write down every relationship (personally or professionally) you’re currently investing your time or energy into maintaining.
Write down every task, project, role, or commitment you’re currently saying YES to.
Next to each one, write a + IF investing in this relationship or activity energizes you.
Write a - next to the ones that deplete or drain you.
If something is neutral (not energizing OR depleting), leave it blank.
On a new piece of paper, transfer every relationship or activity that received a +.
I invite you to consider these questions:What is it about the + relationships that energize you?
What is about the + activities/tasks/commitments that energize you?
How does it feel to only see energizing relationships/commitments on the page?
If this is what your life could look and feel like most of the time, how might you feel?
Go back to your initial list.
Take a black marker and cross out every relationship or activity that depletes you (you’re not actually going to do this yet or unless you choose to).
As you cross out the depleting/draining items, I invite you to notice how you feel. Do you feel:Guilty?
Ashamed?
Relieved?
Afraid?
Worried?
Anxious?
Spacious?
Free?
Energized?
Intentional?
Powerful?
Mean?
Crazy?
Something else?

There is a difference between creating consistency in regard to your habits, routines, or rituals versus being attached to having perfect habits, routines, and rituals that are unsustainable.
(Based on Christie Inge’s blog post: “The Energy of Human Design Gate 5”.)
Christie Inge/Gate 5
Habits, routines, and rituals must be based on these three things:
Intentions: the direction you’re headed and/or your ideal
Needs: what you require to keep moving in the direction you want to head
Values: what matters the most to you
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice trying to be “perfect” with your habits, routines, and rituals?
Which of your habits, routines, and rituals are easefully consistent?
What are your deepest intentions in your life?
What habits are preventing you from living those intentions?
What habits would support your intentions?
What are the clues in your life that your habits, routines, and rituals are actually working for you?
6 Human Needs

In The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward, author Britt Frank offers four “challenges” to undertake in order to discern when you feel anxious in the presence of another person:

CHALLENGE #1:
On one side of the paper list all of the stressful people with whom you spend time.
On the other side of the paper write: “My real feelings about him/her/them are… “
Then write: “I have a right to my feelings.”
CHALLENGE #2:
Make a list of all of the stressful tasks on your plate.
On the bottom of the page write:
“It makes sense that I’m feeling anxious, stressed, or overwhelmed. I’ll feel better if I tackle BLANK first.”
CHALLENGE #3:
Make a list of anything else that is causing you stress that is not a task or person (finances/work/health/etc.).
At the bottom of the page write: “Here are 5 things I can do in less than 5 minutes to feel 5% better.”
CHALLENGE #4:
“My anxiety makes sense. Anyone in my situation would feel anxious. I may not even understand it right now, but I’m not crazy.”

I invite you to consider these questions:
Which of these challenges resonated most deeply with you?
Which one challenge are you willing to experiment with today?

Why Anxiety Is Your Superpower

Wednesday Sep 25, 2024

Wednesday Sep 25, 2024

In The Science of Stuck: Breaking Through Inertia To Find Your Path Forward, author Britt Frank likens anxiety to an “check-engine indicator light in a car”:
“The light (anxiety) itself isn’t the problem - it’s a signal pointing you toward a problem. Trying to ‘get rid of’ anxiety is as counterproductive as trying to disable the check-engine light on your car.”
She offers these bottom-line takeaways (and I paraphrase):
Anxiety serves as a check-engine light for your body.
Your brain is wired to keep you safe and alive - not happy.
A panic attack is not an attack. Your brain is talking to you.
The inability to feel pain is a weakness - not a strength.
Anxiety might require medical-management (medication).
Anxiety always comes from somewhere - even if you don’t know the somewhere.
Anxiety needs to be understood - not fixed.
A survival response will often look like an anxiety disorder.
You are not crazy.
Frank offers these “Do’s” for anxiety:
Tell yourself: “Just because I don’t know why I’m feeling  like this doesn’t mean there’s not a really good reason for these feelings to be there.”
Remind yourself that your body is not attacking you. It is trying to help you.
Ask yourself if there are areas of your life you hesitate to address because you fear the outcome.
Talk to your doctor about medications and make sure you understand the side effects and potential for dependency.

I invite you to consider these questions:
Which of these takeaways resonated most deeply with you?
How willing are you to embrace a new mindset in regard to anxiety?
How willing are you to seek help in managing your anxiety?

What You're Not Available For

Wednesday Sep 18, 2024

Wednesday Sep 18, 2024

When you notice your mind chattering with Inner Critic fear, worries, what if’s, or worse case scenarios, try this:
“I’m not available for anything that hasn’t actually happened.”
Or, try this:
“I’m not available for anything that isn’t happening right here, right now.”
I invite you to consider these questions:
When do you notice your mind offering you worries, what if’s, or worse case scenarios?
How willing are you to try these two new prompts?
What might prevent you from doing so?
