When You Self-Sabotage By Isolating
We all have different “parts” in our psyches, minds, and souls. Think of each part as a singer on American Idol, competing for the “spotlight” in our lives. Our goal is to:
- identify
- accept
- learn from
- work with
our parts.
In her brilliant book Rezoom: The Powerful Reframe to End the Crash-And-Burn Cycle of Food Addiction, author Susan Pierce Thompson outlines 6 Parts than can sabotage our highest self:
- Indulgers
- Controllers
- Caretakers
- Rebels
- Inner Critics
- Isolators
The Isolator Part interferes with creating healthy connections with others.
Here are the Isolator archetypes or “flavors”:
- Diminisher: “You’re not important and your needs don’t matter.”
- Procrastinator: “I’ll do it tomorrow.”
- Cynic: “Don’t trust anyone - they’ll just disappoint you.”
- Soloist: “I’ll do so much better alone.”
- Workaholic: “I don’t have time for friends - I’m too busy.”
- Secret Keeper: “I’m too ashamed - I can’t tell anyone.”
- Incognito: “I’m only safe if I’m invisible.”
- Misfit: “I don’t want to belong.”
- One-Night Stander: “I’ll be physically close to others but not emotionally vulnerable.”
- Luddite: “I don’t do social media.”
- Screen Addict: “If I stare at my phone I can avoid interacting with people.”
I invite you to consider these questions:
- When do you notice your Isolator Part trying to protect you from experiencing rejection, disappointment, or exclusion?
- What type of Isolator resonates most with you?
