When You’re Overwhelmed
In her latest book, Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of the Human Experience, five-time #1 New York Times best-selling author Brene Brown writes:
“Overwhelmed means an extreme level of stress, an emotional and/or cognitive intensity to the point of feeling unable to function… completely overcome or overpowered by thought or feeling… “
Consider these questions:
- When do you feel overwhelmed?
- When do you feel unsure of what to do next?
- When do you feel as if your life is unfolding faster than I can handle it?
- What are the sensations of overwhelm in your body?
- When do you argue with, ignore, avoid, or numb your overwhelm?
- What does your body need when you’re overwhelmed and what might prevent you from listening?
