Stop Rescuing Your Body
When we rescue others from their problems or emotions, we are doing so because we don’t believe that they are capable of figuring things out on their own.
We do the same thing to ourselves and to our bodies when we buffer or numb our negative emotions with food or drink.
Consider these questions:
- What are you telling yourself that you can’t handle feeling without food or drink?
- What negative emotions are you rescuing yourself from feeling with food or drink?
- Are you intentionally indulging in delicious food or drink and numbing OR are you numbing difficult emotions with food or drink?
- What emotions do you numb?
Negative emotions feel horrible, but we can handle feeling horrible. We don’t need food or drink to rescue us from painful emotions.
The benefit you get from numbing your emotions is immediate, yet temporary relief. But, you’ll end up with a hangover and the emotions will still be waiting for you.
You can COACH yourself through negative emotions by:
- Naming the emotion: “I’m frustrated.”
- Describing the sensations of the emotion in your body: “My chest is tight and my gut is jittery.”
- Asking your body: “What do you need?”
- Setting a timer and noticing how long it takes for your emotion to run its course, much like a ride on a rollercoaster.
- Identifying the flavor of emotion you tend to feel most often when you’re off track:
- Frustration?
- Anger?
- Bitterness? Resentment?
- Disappointment?
- Identifying the flavor of emotion you tend to feel when you’re back on track:
- Satisfied?
- Fulfilled?
- Delighted or surprised?
- Peaceful or content?
