Introverted or Socially Anxious?

There’s a difference between being introverted and being socially anxious. 

Introverted people tend to:

  • recharge from within
  • enjoy solitary pursuits
  • relax and unwind alone

A person who struggles with social anxiety may experience:

  • worry about doing something embarrassing in public
  • avoid interacting with people
  • get fixated on potential “screw-ups” in social settings
  • feel frustrated and lonely because they struggle to connect with others

Social Anxiety Vs. Introversion

I invite you to consider these questions:

  • Do you notice an “alarm” going off in your body when you’re in social settings?
  • What types of social situations are most triggering?
  • What do you tend to be thinking in triggering social situations about you or about others?
  • When do you resist your need to recharge as an introvert?
  • As an introvert, what types of social engagements do you prioritize?
