How To Be A Friend Others Celebrate
In celebration of the life of my beautiful college friend, Christine Marquise, I’d like to highlight what made her wonderfully brilliant, as there is so much to be learned from her legacy.
Christine, or “Ollie”, as we lovingly called her, was an energizing, rather than depleting or draining friend. Here’s why:
- She was emotionally mature and willing to be emotionally vulnerable
- She gave her friends “equal air time” by listening and asking questions
- She didn’t compete with friends (from a place of superiority) or get stuck in comparison-itis with friends (from a place of inferiority). She brought her best self to the friendship and wanted others to do the same.
- She was physically, emotionally, and mentally present without the distraction of her phone.
I invite you to consider these questions:
- How willing are you to share vulnerably with your friends without dumping
- How aware are you in your friendships of listening more than you talk?
- How willing are you to get curious about how competition and comparison-itis might be showing up in your friendships?
- How willing are you to be present in your friendships
